BMW Oil Change & Inspection Reminder Reset – X5

May 14, 2010

Q
Can you tell me how to reset the service / oil change lights on the dash of a 2004 X5 3.0i after the oil has been changed ?
I have been told that this can be done through the vehicle’s computer and would like to know how so I can get away from having to take my X5 to the dealer every time it needs servicing ! I would like to be able to purchase what I need for servicing from another source and not be tied to the BMW dealer for servicing .
Thanks you for any help you can give with this!

A
The oil change and service interval reminders, on the E53 chassis (X5 through 07), must be reset via a reset tool. We do offer a fault code reader and reset tool that will work for you. The tool plugs into the OBD-II port (in the under-dash trim panel, above your left knee). The tool will read stored engine management fault codes (that are generated when the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light comes on), clear the codes and will reset the inspection and oil change reminders.
