BMW and MINI Motor Oils, LL-98 vs LL-01 vs LL-04

August 22, 2018

While, there are many motor oils that meet, or exceed, the API (American Petroleum Institute) requirements for use in BMWs and MINIs, many BMW and MINI owners prefer to adhere to the BMW specific “Longlife” specifications, to include; the obsolete Longlife-98 and the current Longlife-01 and Longlife-04 specifications.  In reference to these specs, there has been some level of confusion.  Let’s take a quick look at the three Longlife specs:

Longlife-98 (LL-98):
BMW longlife (extended oil change intervals) approved oils.  Typically called out for BMWs through 2001.  Superseded to Longlife-01.

Longlife-01 (LL-01):
BMW longlife approved synthetic technology oils (BMW and MINI branded oils are Hydrocrack oils … not full synthetic). Typically called out for BMWs and MINIs 2002 on (with some exceptions).  Also for use where LL-98 was originally called for.

Longlife-04 (LL-04):
BMW longlife approved synthetic technology oils (BMW and MINI branded oils are Hydrocrack oils … not full synthetic). Low SAP (Sulfur, Ash, Particulates) formulation, required for Diesel models with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).  Can also be used in all gas & diesel engines that do not specifically call for LL-04 oils.
