Hi all! April marks the official Grand Opening of the new BAVauto.com.

This new site works equally well on desktop computers, tablets and mobile devices. If you create an account on the site, you can keep several BMWs and/or MINIs in your ‘‘garage,’’ store multiple shipping addresses in your address book, review your purchase history, store a shopping cart, create a wish list, refine search results by size/color/brand/etc., and lots more.

As with any new site, this one is a work-in-progress and we are open to input from true BMW and MINI enthusiasts like you. So please take it for a test drive and let us know what you think.

    My 2003 BMW 535i sedan will not start for days, then will start and run for awhile, then, once again, will not start. When I say “will not start” I mean will not crank – the lights will be working but the engine does not turn over and no “clicks.” Replaced battery within last month. Low, but not out of, fuel at these times.

      Without having the car to diagnose, I can just offer some areas of thought.

      Symptom:Intermittent no start/no crank.

      1) The E39 chassis has a history of worn out ignition switch issues. Test the starter energize output wire from the ignition switch, for 12 volts when the key is in the START position. If no power, likely a bad ignition switch. Of course, this test would need to be done when it is in the no-start mode.

      2) Bad starter solenoid. Test for 12 volts on the small wire going to the starter solenoid, when the key is turned to START. Is there is 12 volts, the starter solenoid is likely bad. Again, this must be done when it is in the no-start mode. If there is no 12 volts, and the ignition switch has been checked, then the fault may be the EWS security system of the safety switch in the shifter (assuming it is automatic trans).

      3) Test the starter safety switch in the shifter (automatic trans). You’ll need the wiring diagrams to do this.

      4) The EWS security system may be at fault. This could be the chip in the key (if you have two keys, does one woerk when the other does not?), the receiver antenna ring around the key tumbler in the column, the EWS module. Diagnosing the EWS system requires a good knowledge of the EWS operation and the wiring diagrams.
