Replacing BMW Rear Wheel Bearings

This answer is applicable for many BMWs in addition to the one listed below.

Q
Car year: 1988
Car model: 325i Convertible
I need to replace the rear wheel bearing, left side. This is showing up as uneven tire wear on only that tire and a slight squeal when I brake. Do I need to purchase the bearing, backing plate, collar nut, and locking clip?

I did take the car to a mechanic and they did mention play in the bearing (or wheel hub assembly, as they called it). I do not feel excessive vibration or hear any rumbling noise that I can detect. At slow speeds with the windows down I can seem to hear what sounds like something metal rolling around inside the wheel. I realize it’s not in the wheel itself, but in that area of the car.

The rear wheel bearings on BMWs are of a twin-roller sealed type. There is one bearing assembly on each axle and the bearing is non-serviceable. When it displays wear (wobble) or noise, the bearing must be replaced.

The rear wheel bearing on most BMW models is pressed into the hub assembly (trailing arm, hub casting, etc.) and the wheel drive flange is then pressed into the inner race of the bearing. In order to remove the wheel drive and then the bearing itself, you will need a specific bearing puller and installer tool that has the proper sized arbors for the BMW bearings. While it is possible to remove everything without the bearing tool (using slide hammers, gear pullers, punches and hammers …. and a lot of sweat), it is certainly easier with the special tool. However, upon installation, the bearing tool is essential. If the wheel drive flange is pressed (or beat) into the bearing, without the proper arbors and the bearing tool, the inner race of the bearing will be damaged. In effect, you’d be trying to push the inner race out of the bearing.

In replacing the bearing you’ll need; the bearing, the bearing retainer snap-ring and a new axle nut. You should also be prepared to replace the brake backing plate due to the possibility of damage from the bearing tool pressing on the backing plate. As a side note, if your parking brake is inoperative, now would be the time to replace anything that needs repair, including a backing plate that has had the park brake shoe locator pins pulled through the mounting holes.
