BMW No Start Diagnostics

This answer is applicable for many BMWs in addition to the one listed below.

Q My 1994 530i won’t start.  Amoung other things, I checked the crankshaft position sensor and found the resistance to be about half what
the Bentley manual says it should be.  So, I ordered a new one from Bavauto.  The old one’s resistance is 514 ohms, the new one is 687 ohms and the bentley manual says it should be 1280 ohms + or – 10%.
Which is wrong, the Bentley manual or the new part?

A We have found that the resistance value as noted in the Bentley manual, for the crankshaft position sensor on your 94 530i is incorrect. The resistance is about half of the value that the Bentley manual calls out for this application. I just tested a new sensor (from our stock) and it reads 555 ohms (between terminals 1 & 2).

If the engine is still not starting (but the starter is cranking), please follow the testing and diagnosing outlined in the DIY article in the Fall 2007 issue of our Bavarian Autosport Fast Times newsletter (see link below). The answers to these tests will guide us in the proper direction for further diagnosis.
