Q
I currently have a 2000 328i. The light is out for the check engine light, and the car wont pass emissions right now. I know that you have to replace the whole cluster instead of one bulb. I was curious if a used cluster would work, or does it have to be a brand new cluster to work.
A
While it is true that the instrument cluster is looked at, by BMW, as a non-servicable part you can actually open the cluster to replace bulbs. This would include the bulb for the Check Engine light. As for a used cluster, the instrument cluster must be coded to work in your vehicle. A cluster coded for another model may not read properly and may create an odometer tampering code, which cannot be eliminated.
