BMW Brake Light / Circuit Warning

This answer is applicable for many BMWs in addition to the one listed below.
Q
car year: 1988
car model: 325i Convertible

My overhead console shows the brake lights have an issue and of course the check light blinks every time I start the car. However the brake lights all seem to work just fine, any idea what might cause the check light to go on? It does not seem to be a big deal, just annoying.

A On the E30 chassis (3 series 84 through 91), it is normal for the BRAKE LIGHT indicator on the Check-Control display to come on when you start the engine (along with the CHECK light in the instrument cluster). Both lights should go off the first time you hit the brake pedal or if you press the CHECK button on the display panel. If they do not, we can perform some diagnostics.

If the BRAKE LIGHT warning on the Check-Control display is staying on, but the brake lights do work properly, we can start by performing the following steps (These steps/tips are generally applicable to all BMW models with Check-Control systems, when a brake light or circuit fault is indicated):

First is problems with the bulbs, sockets or connections for the brake lights. Perform these checks:

* Make sure that the bulbs on both sides (left & right) are exactly the same (and the center brake light).

* Check to see that the bulbs have nickel plated bases (not brass). We keep the nickel base bulbs in stock.

* Check for worn, loose or oxidized contacts on the bulb sockets and where the sockets plug into the light housings. We do stock replacement sockets. Do the same check for the wiring harness plug at the tail light assembly.

If all appears to be OK, we offer a product called DeoxIT that is designed to enhance electrical contact and can be used on the bulb contact points, the bulb socket contact points and the harness plug contacts. Often, this will cure an errant “bulb out” warning.

Secondly, there is the possibility of a faulty brake light switch. This is the switch at the brake pedal that turns on the brake lights when the pedal is depressed. Worn or pitted contacts in the switch can cause the Check-Control system to activate the brake light or circuit warnings. If all of the above actions (including the application of the DeoxIT) do not cure the faulty warning, we would suggest that you replace the brake light switch.
