2001 325it Wagon – E46 M54 Camshaft Sensors / Blower Final Stage / Central Locking

Q I have a 2001 325it sport wagon. My service engine light has been on for about 3months, so I bought your
Fault reader/ reset tool.
When I tested the car I was given these codes.

table 19
code – 12 (Exhaust Camshaft sensor)
Code – 2d (MFL bit toggle) –I think it was a (d).
if not 2d then 2b (MFL seesaw key) I will explain symptom later, which
might help.
code – 41 (Intake camshaft sensor.)

My Symptoms:
From Idle take off, the car stalls, if however I feel the flutter,I can quickly feather the gas peddle and keep the engine going.

If it stalls, then the restart is hard, between 6-12 turns of the engine, but it will start. However it usually is lethargic for about two or three starts. The idle will run about 100 to 150 rpm higher when the symptoms are active. This is a consistent, intermittent.

My service engine light is on, however the light will go out for short intervals, and the idle will return to proper levels, and the engine performance is at the expected levels, Maybe 15 min to 1hour at a time. Then the light returns with the problems. Or on the next restart, if I have no light at shut off, I will get the light back at restart.

My key has begun to have intermittent problems as well. For example I am no longer able to use the push button to open my doors, mostly. Meaning that about 1 out of 10 tries, I can normally unlock my doors.
otherwise I either have to be right next to my drivers door, or use the door lock itself to unlock. The same situation for the lock button on the key. In 2007 I had the steering column replaced, the steer lock cylinder,( used existing key), steering wiper switch all replaced due to a break in.

Another curious thing about 1 month ago I had my door locks randomly opening and lock on their own, this lasted about 1 wk, and has not happened since.

My vent/heater motor oscillates up and down on rpm, on all but the fast setting, this issue also causes my lights to mildly dim and brighten in relation to the motors cycle.

I realize that theses symptoms may not be related, or that it may be a “I have no Idea”. However my main concern is to have the service engine light and codes fixed. Before I start to buy and replace, I want to make
sure that there is something not being missed. Any help or suggetions I would greatly welcome.

A Let’s look at the engine management issues first. If you have cleared the codes and the same ones return, I would replace the two camshaft sensors. These are common failure items and certainly can produce the symptoms that you’ve described. I’m not sure what the MFL code is representing, but it may just disappear after the cam sensors are replaced. If not, we can research it further.

Do you have the two original main keys? If so, do both keys (remotes) act in the same manner? If they both produce the same intermittent operation, the problem is within the vehicle’s central locking system. There could be an issue with the receiver or perhaps the body control module.

Your fan operation issues are likely due to the common failure of the Blower final stage unit (sometimes called blower resistor, from the older systems that were not electronically operated). The final stage unit controls the blower motor speed.

Replacement of the above mentioned parts, as well as further information on the central locking system, is covered in the Bentley repair manual for your 325it.
