Q
I own a ‘93 525I with 347,000 miles. The drivers seat back has recently twisted so that I need a cushion to drive. The dealer says that There is a cable that needs to be fixed for about $200.00. Is there something I can do myself to correct this?
A
You twisting seatback is likely due to a faulty cable or gearbox for the recline function. Most common is a fault with the cables. This issue applies to all 5, 6, 7 and 8 series models with power seats, up through the mid-’90s.
With age the cables twist and shrink and then pull out of the drive sockets (or they simply break). We can order you a new cable and they are relatively easy to install (we need to know which seat, which side of the seat and if the car has the seat & mirror memory function). The only part of the procedure that can be tedious is getting both sides of the seatback lined up properly before installing the cable. This just takes some patience. While the Bentley repair manual does not specifically cover cable replacement, it does address disassembly and general servicing of the seats, which will get you to the cables.
Please give our agents a call at 800-535-2002 to order the cable(s).
