1990 BMW 325is E30 M20 Stumbles During Acceleration

Q
I recently begun having trouble when I accelerate in my 1990 325is. It stumbles during acceleration at speeds up to about 65 mph. I just replaced the oxygen sensor and fuel filter this weekend. The old sensor had about 51,000 miles on it. The spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor button only about 13,000. Ignition wires have about 60,000 miles on them. What should I do now?

We could be dealing with a number of issues. Here are some initial thoughts:

1) Check all of the rubber hoses, boots, bellows, etc., that carry air. This includes the intake bellows, all of the hoses coming off the bellows, the crankcase vent of the valve cover …. etc. Look for deterioration, cracks, loose fittings or other potentials for vacuum leaks.

2) Crankshaft position sensor – The crank position sensor may be failing due to either an internal open or short, in the sensor, or a problem with the sensor’s wiring harness being broken or frayed where it connects into the sensor or the plug (or from rubbing on the back of the water pump pulley).

3) RPM pick-up on spark plug wire -  make a visual inspection of the inductive pick-up ring on the #6 spark plug wire and its wiring to the harness plug connection.

4) It wouldn’t hurt to check if there are any engine fault codes stored. We offer the code reader tool. The tool will also reset the oil change and inspection/service reminders.

Let us know what you find. If you don’t see anything out of line, you may want to just replace the crankshaft position sensor as a first move.
