Transmission Slips When Cold
Q I have a 1994 325i Convertible and I live where the temp. drops below 30f, when it does get cold the transmission SOMETIMES slips if below operating temp.(below freezing temp.)Not every time, at times it will drop in gear upon starting. As you well know I have been told it is not serviceable (small town) I think this trany has 75k on it and the car has 152k, no sign of leaking and stays locked in after good warm up, Any thoughts?
A I would suggest a fluid and filter change, for your transmission. The transmission is not “sealed” as many BMW dealers would lead you to believe, and the fluid is certainly not “lifetime”. Your old fluid may be getting a bit sludgy from age and wear particles. We do carry the filter kits and the fluid. If, when you drain the fluid, it looks rather nasty (dark colored) I would suggest a second drain and fill of the fluid (without dropping the pan or touching the new filter) after driving it for a day or so.

We also offer a nice fluid transfer pump to use when refilling the transmission. The Bentley repair manual will guide you through the filter and fluid change.
