2000 BMW E39 528i Life Expectancy For Struts & Shocks

July 1, 2010

This answer is applicable for many BMWs in addition to the one listed below.

Q
What the life expectancy in terms of miles(currently at 55k) & years of the struts & shocks of this vehicle? If it is time for replacing, what to you recommend ?

A
While, at 55,000 miles, your shocks may not be totally ineffective, you would see an improvement in ride and suspension control, by replacing them. If (or when) you choose to renew the shocks on your 528i, you have two general choices.

1) Stock type replacement shocks – We carry the Sachs direct replacement shocks. These are the same as the original BMW shocks (which are made by Sachs) and will return the suspension to a “as new” condition.

2) Upgraded Bilstein shocks – The Bilstein shocks are not only extreme long-life units, they also upgrade the suspension to a firmer, more performance oriented ride. If this is what you would like, the Bilsteins may be for you. If you just want the car to be as BMW designed it, stick with the Sachs units.  For either installation, there are various other parts that we would want to consider as the job is done. Our agents can help you in this area. Just give them a call at 800-535-2002.
